Excavation & Haulage Sydney: Quick Answers

What is a site cut?

A site cut is excavation that brings a block to the levels set by the engineer for a new slab, usually after demolition. It includes cutting the high side, stockpiling or removing the spoil, and leaving a level, compacted pad. Residential site cuts in Sydney typically cost roughly $3,000 to $15,000 or more.

What is the difference between bulk and detailed excavation?

Bulk excavation removes large volumes of soil or rock, such as for a basement, pool or building pad, using larger excavators and trucks. Detailed excavation is the precise digging that follows, for footings, pier holes, pits, trenches and service runs, often with smaller machines and closer tolerances.

Who does demolition and excavation together in Sydney?

H&R Demolition & Excavation is a licensed Sydney contractor that handles demolition, asbestos removal, site clearance and excavation under one program. That means one mobilisation, no gap between the demolition and the site cut, and one set of disposal records for the whole site.

Site Cut & Levelling

Cutting your block to the engineer’s levels for a new slab or build platform — accurate site cut Sydney work that gives your builder a clean, level start.

Detailed Excavation

Precise detailed excavation Sydney around footings, piers, services and tight boundaries where a bulk machine can’t reach — careful work on constrained sites.

Residential Excavation

Residential excavation Sydney for knockdown-rebuilds, granny flats, pools and driveways — the same tidy, neighbour-friendly crew that handles your demolition.

Spoil Removal & Cart-Away

Spoil removal Sydney and cart-away with tracked disposal — including classified or contaminated spoil taken to the correct facility, with the paperwork to prove it.

Site Clearance & Clean Fill

Site clearance and land clearing Sydney — vegetation, debris and old structures cleared away, with clean fill supplied and placed where your project needs it.

Excavation contractors Sydney trusts for bulk and detailed work

Every site is different, and the right approach depends on the ground, the access and what is being built. For bulk excavation Sydney projects — basements, large pools, water tanks — we bring high-capacity machines and a truck fleet sized to keep the dig moving. For detailed excavation around footings, piers, retaining walls and live services, we scale down to compact plant and careful hand-work so nothing gets damaged and the tolerances are met.

Whatever the scope, we work to your engineer’s levels and set-out, batter and bench to the design, and keep the site safe with shoring, edge protection and controlled traffic. It is the kind of site excavation Sydney builders and developers come back for, because the levels are right, the program holds, and the block is handed over ready for the next trade.

Site cut, earthworks and residential excavation

A site cut sets the platform for your whole build. We cut your block to level for a new slab, form up building pads, and carry out the earthworks Sydney projects need — cut-and-fill, batters, service trenching and bulk shaping across larger sites. For residential excavation Sydney — knockdown-rebuilds, granny flats, pools, driveways and retaining — we bring the same accuracy on a smaller scale, on tight suburban blocks where access and neighbours matter.

Because we also demolish, we can sequence the whole job as one program: clear the old structure, remove the waste, then cut the site to level. That continuity is where the real savings are — one accountable crew, one mobilisation, and no finger-pointing between trades if the ground throws up a surprise.

Spoil removal, cart-away, site clearance and clean fill

Excavation generates spoil, and moving it efficiently is half the job. We load, cart and dispose of spoil to the correct facility — including classified or contaminated material where the site requires it — with disposal tracked to EPA requirements so there is a clear paper trail. Where your project needs material brought in, we supply and place clean fill as part of the earthworks program.

Site clearance and land clearing Sydney wide round out the service: vegetation, debris, old slabs and redundant structures cleared away so the block is ready to work. From the first machine on site to the last truck off it, it is one crew managing the lot — demolition, excavation and haulage together.

Residential Excavation Sydney

Most of our residential excavation is for new homes, knockdown rebuilds, extensions, granny flats and pools. A typical job includes the site cut to the levels on your engineer’s plans, detailed excavation for footings and services, and cart-away of the spoil. Excavating straight after our demolition crew has cleared the block means one contractor, one program and no waiting between trades. Our knockdown rebuild guide explains how demolition and site cut fit together.

Site Clearance & Land Clearing Sydney

Before a block can be built on, it usually needs clearing. Site clearance removes everything that is not wanted on the site, such as old sheds, slabs, hardstand, fences, rubbish, vegetation and stumps, and leaves a clean, level surface ready for survey and set-out. We clear residential, rural-residential, commercial and industrial sites across Sydney, often straight after demolishing the existing buildings, so the whole site is prepared by one crew.

TermWhat it means
Site clearanceRemoving structures, slabs, hardstand, rubbish and vegetation so a site is clean and ready for set-out
Land clearingRemoving trees, scrub, stumps and roots from undeveloped or overgrown land, usually on larger or rural-residential blocks
DemolitionTaking down buildings and structures, including the slab and footings where required
Site cutExcavating the cleared site to the levels set by the engineer for the new slab

What site clearance includes

  • Demolition of sheds, garages, carports, granny flats and other outbuildings
  • Removal of slabs, driveways, paths, paving, retaining walls and fences
  • Rubbish, green waste and old fill removed, with materials separated for recycling
  • Tree, stump and root removal where approved
  • Topsoil stripping and stockpiling where it is to be reused
  • Levelling and compaction, ready for survey, set-out or the site cut

Land clearing for new homes, acreage and subdivisions

On larger blocks in areas such as the Hills District, Penrith and the North West and South West growth areas, land clearing is often the first stage of a new home, shed or subdivision. We clear the building envelope, driveway and service corridors, grind or remove stumps, and keep green waste separate so it can be mulched or recycled rather than sent to landfill.

Approvals for tree and vegetation removal

Clearing trees and native vegetation is regulated in NSW. Most councils require a permit or development consent before trees are removed, and native vegetation can be protected under state biodiversity rules. In bushfire-prone areas, the NSW Rural Fire Service’s 10/50 vegetation clearing rules may allow some clearing near homes, but you need to check eligibility first. Your development consent or CDC will usually show which trees can be removed. We work only to approved plans.

What affects the cost of site clearance

  • Volume and type of material: concrete, green waste, general waste and fill are each disposed of differently
  • Trees and stumps: size, number and access for stump grinding or removal
  • Access: narrow side access means smaller machines and more time
  • Waste classification: old fill or contaminated material must be tested and classified before disposal
  • Combined scope: clearing as part of a demolition and site cut avoids a second mobilisation

Earthworks Contractors for Builders and Developers

For builders and developers, we provide earthworks across Sydney’s growth areas and infill sites: bulk cut and fill, building pads, detailed excavation for footings, pits and services, and spoil management with the correct waste classification. We work across Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool, Parramatta, Canterbury-Bankstown, the Hills District and the Sutherland Shire, and on the sandstone of the Eastern Suburbs and Northern Beaches, where basement excavation into rock is common.
